See below for our Q&A with Catherine!
1. Can you tell us a bit about your business? When and why did it start?
Buttonlove started in 2008. I was working as a nanny at the time and decided to put my love of kids and fashion together. I started out with my hand drawn cartoons on tee's then stockists asked for more so full collections grew from that. Buttonlove is a label for babies and toddlers to age 3, it's a stylish clothing line for little people. Buttonlove is proudly made here in New Zealand.
2. Do you have previous fashion experience?
I have always loved fashion, my mum is a very stylish woman and when I was young she would take me on Friday night shopping trips which kick started my intrigue for clothing and fashion. I had a great start working at Dunedin boutique Plume, then subsequently moved on to Zambesi, and abroad to Melbourne working in some fabulous boutiques. When I came back to Auckland I also worked in the boutique Drop Dead Gorgeous. During my time in retail I have always paid close attention to how the businesses have worked and been interested in the backgrounds of labels and how they came to be.
3. What inspires you? Does your daughter Charlie have a big influence on what you design?
Charlie is a big part of the design process, everyday with her I am inspired. Whether it is the functionality, the durability or practicality of a piece. I always keep in mind the day to day activities Charlie undertakes, and as a parent, how the piece works. Friends of mine that are parents have proven great sounding boards for feedback on which styles they like and their feedback has gone a long way since the first season. Sometimes I flag all that and just follow through with a piece that that I feel is straight up fashion, a piece that is just too cute to resist seeing your child in!
4. How do you juggle being a mum and running your own label?
Having a great support base of family and friends goes a long way! It can get very busy at times and sometimes overwhelming but when I see Buttonlove on babies and hear the great feedback I feel very proud for juggling it all and very fortunate to have the support that I do.
5.Who are your favourite international brands for children?
I like Bonpoint from France, Seed from Australia, Stella McCartney for her ethical childrens wear and 3.1 Philip Lim has some pretty flash clothing for kids too.
6. What do see long term for Buttonlove?
Buttlonlove as a well known NZ made label synonymous for style and quality in the baby and kids market here and abroad.
Wishing all the best Cat, we love your designs very much!
