Can you believe it is nearing the end of January already! So many things in the fashion world have been happening, that time has just flown by.  Hawes & Freer have yet to check out the recently launched COOP container store (the new Trelise Cooper label) in Britomart, Auckland City. Have you seen it? We would love to hear your thoughts, it looks amazing.  The video above captures the pop up parade they hosted, featuring their Summer range- which by the way is on SALE! You can have a peek online at the collection.

On a side note, hope you are enjoying this great sunshine :)

Fruit scented, gummy lollie inspired garments have won Wellington Massey University fashion graduate Samantha Murray, a place in finals of the  iD Dunedin 2012 Awards.  The event is an internationally esteemed show for emerging designers.  Her innovative collection, Sweet Suspension is guaranteed to intrigue the judges.  These amazing garments are made from liquid Fiberform – which involved pouring a solution into a plastic mould, creating a lightweight structure formed without using a single thread or stitch!! During the development process she added fruit scents to the liquid. The garments are also incredibly light, each weighing no more than a kilo.  The 23 year old describes her collection as an exercise in rethinking garment construction.  “I’m really interested in sustainable fashion. My idea with using liquid is you don’t create any waste. You are only pouring exactly what is necessary,” Samantha Murray says.  “I’m calling it a prototype system. It’s not perfectly refined but it’s something I’d like to look at more in the future.”

It took Samantha six months to develop the technique, and then make the garments. Each shape is carved out of polystyrene and then vacuum formed. She began by researching spray-on fabric, Fabrican, and developed her own “low tech version” spending a lot of time in the lab doing small scale trials before making the garments. The difference being her garments hold its own shape on a hanger. “You are creating an external shape that exists independently of the body,” she says. Afterwards Murray hopes to return to London where she worked for a year between her third and fourth year at Massey in Wellington. She has applied to do her masters in textile futures at St Martin’s where she hopes, if she is accepted, to develop the idea. During her gap year she worked for London based designersd; eight months for Christopher Kane and two months for Joanna Sykes. The latter experience saw her embark on a 24-hour London, Milan, London mission for Sykes. “It was just before London Fashion Week and they hadn’t received the shoes from the factory in Milan so they flew me over. It was like The Amazing Race; I had 24 hours before the presentation began at London Fashion Week. It was a crazy trying to get there and back in time” she says.

Hawes & Freer want to wish her and all the designers the very best in the final preperatins for iD Dunedin Fashion Week 2012.
