Merchant Taylor

Introducing The White Peacock Winter 2013 collection by Merchant Taylor. Designer Tina Thomas
A little history... The brand was created about 3 years ago- After graduating from Chistchurch Polytech in 1996, Tina has been involved in costume- working in film, television, theatre, opera and ballet; being lucky enough to work with and make costumes for people such as Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving, Jimi Smit, and Hayden Christensen. Tina has a massive love for historical fashion and after moving back to Christchurch to raise a family (after 5 years in Sydney) she still wanted to be involved in costume. The theatre scene is pretty small in New Zealand now,so after her third child, Tina and husband Tim decided to create a great brand that was limited, unique and had a historical twist.

The White Peacock certaintly does have a 20's feel. Merchant Taylor uses quality fabrics, and take great care into the finishing details; lace hems, bra strap retainers on sleeveless garments, all fully lined and manufactured locally. The collection is monochromatic in its colouring - with charcoals, silvers, creams, whites and black, giving the range a simple and classic feel. Fabrics used include; silk twill, silk velvet, lace, textured wool, and fur feature in the range. The pieces are limited and unique and we are sure any women would feel smart and glamorous in them.

Veronica B.

Veronica B (www.veronicab.com) launched in April 2012 by designers Maureen Bell and Chantelle Allonby.  Veronica B is a new designer label with limited edition assecories; bags, belts, jewellery and garments made from New Zealand and European leather.

The Veronica B concept, displays the pair’s unique combination of experience coupled with a youthful eye. Maureen Bell, industry veteran and avid collector of vintage bags, has run a successful accessories manufacturing business for 30 years. Chantelle, who had been working in Maureen’s company for four years, is a new talent producing accessories that display her keen eye for trends and fun, bold designs. With interest at an all-time high, the girls are working hard to keep up with the demand for their custom-made products, with pieces such as the chain necklaces and pony fur clutches flying out of their Eden Terrace showroom. Well done girls!

Taylor Winter 2013

Taylor is a well established New Zealand label (started in 1999), however she has never participated in fashion week up until now. Designer Vicki Taylor said she decided it was a great time to showcase her range to the public, thank those long standing customers. We thought it was a very strong and polished looking show. As soon as we walked into the shed, we noticed black and grey circles all over the catwalk, this was a very effective look that encapsulated Vicki Taylor's style. The chosen colour palette was black, white, grey, fresh lemon yellow, gold, coral and a hint of red. The hair styling made the models look even taller and gave great cohesion to the collection. We love how Vicki Taylor's garments always look like she has had a lot of fun creating them; the use of different compositions paneled and layered together. Details we enjoyed were the strips of silk, the net looking fabric, created from silk binding all sewn together and the circle embroidered fabric. Trend spotted: thick belts-we haven't seen these in fashion for a while, is it making a come back?
